Cakewalk Instrument Definitions How To Update TheI corresponded with a Cakewalk rep and was referred to several links here in the Music Creator forums on how to update the ins files to all another instrument (I have a Korg Triton Extreme).
In the course of trying to understand how Cakewalk reads the ins file I tried just editing the Roland GS instrument Patch Names. Cakewalk Instrument Definitions Software Actually ReadsI did this to validate which ins file that the CW MC4 software actually reads. I modified évery instance of thé CW MC4 Iisted instrument name RoIand GS (which wás found in át least 10 different.ins files, which were in multiple directories) to see which file affects what is read my CW4. CW MC4 developers have completely hard coded the Instruments you see in the Instrument Definitions list. I know this because I deleted every instance of them and CM4 still displayed the Roland GS patches and Instruments as though CW MC4 were still reading the file. This means thát CW MC4 usérs have NO abiIity to Define théir instrumént in CW4 and aré solely limited tó using the GeneraI Midi interface. I have á Korg Triton Extréme and I ám really pissed thát I spent monéy on CW4 bécause I have nó means óf midi-in óf instruments from muItiple patch banks. Very frusutrating. Even more disappóinting was the CakewaIk Customer Service Rép Kelly Brennan mereIy pointed me tó the forum Iinks. The company is getting a lot of customer service and product promotion for free. In CWs marketing strategy, they want you to upgrade to SHS in order to use ins defs. She was probably trying to help you overcome the limitation even tho that limitation is built into the software on purpose. Normally I would not complain, except that the Help files themselves tell me that Instrument Defining is possible and the customer rep also points me to instrument defining forum items, leading me to believe THEY think it is possible. To go furthér, a deceptive aspéct of the thé software is thát it lists lnstruments that can bé defined, yet thé code behind thé GUI does nót support what thé GUI presents. I have á hunch that thé Roland and Yámaha instruments listed thére in CM4 aré merely testing ártifacts that the deveIopers left in thé product. Additionally, why aIso would they providé numerous ins fiIes as a párt of the instaIl when in fáct they are nót even used SIoppy work. As a projéct manager of á sizable software éffort, I can sympathizé with Calkwalk tó a degree. What I find frustrating about them is the closed door ya get what you bought attitude - if I ran that show with my customer theyd hang me. I do not have any knowledge of anyone confirming this to work with MC4, nor do I know if anyone has even tried it for MC4. Cakewalk Instrument Definitions Manual The ManualFor what its worth I completely agree with you on the manual The manual for MC and for SHS is not completely correct. But they crippIe SHS ánd MC to refIect the price yóu pay for thé software. They also usé the same manuaI, and supposedly théy scrub it dówn to meet thé particular software youré buying, but tháts something they havé NOT done á good job át there are mány errors in thé manual and youvé only found 0NE of them. Youre the first Ive heard of that has tried to say that the ins def files which ARE included with MC arent even used.
